  • Successfully win grievances
WeeksDaysHoursMinutesSeconds

What is this boot camp about?

Understanding that bargaining and contract enforcement are interconnected and essential union functions to protect our membership, we will explore how strategic campaigns can be used to effectively negotiate at the table and successfully win grievances. We will train not only in technique, but also in taking a strategic organizing approach to bargaining and enforcing strong contracts.

Delegates will learn from experienced bargainers and grievance handlers about how practical strategies have been used to win and enforce record contracts across our union.
This institute is designed to fit all UAW local union bargainers and grievance handlers from every UAW sector. Whether newly elected or seasoned, delegates will be presented with workshop options that fit their role and experience level.

Four core learning tracks will be offered, along with elective workshops delegates can choose from throughout the week. Local unions must select one of the below core tracks for each delegate as part of the registration process. Delegates should be guided onto a core workshop track that best fits their role and experience level.

Flow-tree Flow-tree

Four Core Learning Tracks

BARGAINING FOUNDATIONS

Establish a strong foundation for your success as a local union bargainer. A broad overview of all key elements of collective bargaining will be provided, including the basics of table technique, the subjects of bargaining, legal considerations, and contract campaigns. Delegates will be introduced to all the fundamentals here, culminating in a lively mock bargaining session. The Education Department’s workshop Bargaining for Bargainers is the primary curriculum for this track.

This track is best suited for:

  • Newer bargainers
  • Experienced bargainers who have not previously attended bargaining training
  • Those looking to sharpen basic table techniques

BARGAINING STRATEGIES

Learn how to turn contract demands into wins through strategic campaigning. Delegates will learn to identify and prioritize core contract issues, map power dynamics, design escalation campaigns, and engage members in participation. New skills will be put to the test in a lively mock bargaining exercise.

This track is best suited for:

  • Delegates who have previously attended some bargaining training
  • Bargainers who are ready to move beyond technical table processes to focus on campaign strategies

GRIEVANCE HANDLING FOUNDATIONS

The gains we make at the bargaining table mean little without active contract enforcement. This track will equip grievance handlers with essential skills to understand, apply, and defend their collective bargaining agreement. Learn how to identify violations and navigate grievance procedures effectively. Basic legal requirements and protections of union representatives will also be explored. The Education Department’s workshop, Grievance Handling, is the primary curriculum for this track.

This track is best suited for:

  • Newer grievance handlers, including stewards, chairpersons, and officers with a role in the grievance procedure at a worksite
  • Experienced grievance handlers who have not previously attended at least one full day of grievance handling training
  • Those looking for a broad overview of everything that it takes to be an effective grievance handler

CONTRACT ENFORCEMENT STRATEGIES

Winning a contract is only half the battle—enforcing it requires constant vigilance and mobilization. This track moves beyond procedural basics to an organizing approach to contract enforcement. Experienced grievance handlers will level up their skills, focusing on strategies to mobilize members to win through collective action.

This track is best suited for:

  • Delegates who have previously attended at least one full day of grievance handling training
  • Experienced grievance handlers who have mastered the procedural basics and are ready to learn about broader enforcement strategies

Who Can Attend?

This institute is open to UAW members in good standing who hold a role in bargaining or grievance handling at their local union. While this institute is best suited for those currently holding a position, aspiring representatives are also welcome to attend.

Members who are on active role, including those currently on layoff or strike, are eligible to attend.

Members who are on sick or medical leave (including leave due to a qualified workers’ compensation injury), retired members, and spouses who are not approved local union members are not eligible to attend.

Attendance is mandatory at all sessions and is taken daily.

All delegates are expected to arrive by registration on Sunday and remain at the conference until Friday morning.

Registration Info

Members interested in attending the Bargaining & Contract Enforcement Boot Camp should contact their local union leadership and request to attend.

Local unions must register their delegates by Monday, August 10, 2026, at 4 p.m. ET.

The institute registration fee is $75 per delegate and must be submitted by the local union online through LUIS no later than the registration deadline. Complete registration information can be found in the call letter packet sent to the local union from the regional office.

NOTE: Without a payment submission, delegate registration will not be approved. Funds will be withdrawn from local unions after online registration closes and the regional approval process is complete.

Vehicle Policy

The UAW Family Education Center is owned and operated by the UAW and our members. It is our center’s policy to only allow union made vehicles that were built in the USA and Canada to stay onsite.

If you arrive in a vehicle that does not fit these criteria, our security guards at the entrance will direct you to park in the lot adjacent to the main entrance. You will be permitted to briefly drive to the main lobby for unloading and loading your vehicle upon arrival and checkout. During your stay, you will not be allowed to drive your vehicle on campus. A shuttle bus is available that can transport you to your vehicle in the outside lot.

Not sure if your vehicle was union made in the USA or Canada? Check your Vehicle Identification Number!

The VIN is located in the upper left corner of the dashboard and on the door jam. If your VIN begins with a 1, 4, or 5, it is made in the USA and if it starts with a 2, it was made in Canada!

To read about our vehicle policy, see Traveling to the UAW Family Education Center.

What are the housing arrangements?

The UAW Family Education Center consists of a main hotel and adjacent buildings with sleeping rooms and full bathroom and shower facilities. Soap, towels, and all bedding are provided.

Standard Pairing: All delegates will be paired with their requested roommate or a randomly assigned partner. This is the standard arrangement and is covered by the conference registration fee.

Single Accommodations: Private single rooms may be requested at an additional cost, but they are subject to availability and cannot be guaranteed.

  • Additional Cost: Single rooms cost an additional $330.50 plus tax for the week per delegate. This cost must be paid at or before check-in. The local union can choose to pay

What should I pack?

A recommended packing list will be shared upon approval of the program.

Attire is informal, and casual clothes are acceptable for classes and evening activities.

On Wednesday, we wear red shirts for solidarity! If you do not own a red shirt, there are some available for purchase at the gift shop and Red Pine Market. You may also want to pack additional items for Wednesday’s free afternoon.

We encourage everyone to pack bathing suits for swimming in the pool or the beach, depending on the season. Towels for the pool are located in the pool area but should not be brought to the beach.

While summers in northern Michigan are typically warmer weather, evenings can be on the cooler side. While enjoying an evening stroll to gaze at the stars or trying to catch a glimpse of the northern lights, you might prefer pants and a light jacket or sweatshirt.

Red Pine Market is located on campus and offers a selection of basic pharmacy items you may need, as well as snacks, beverages, and hand-scooped ice cream!

How do I register for the conference?

If you are member, request to attend this conference through your local union leadership.

Local unions register approved delegates through LUIS and are provided the registration link and credentials in a specific call letter. Refer to the Local Union Process call letter that was sent from the Region for this specific conference.

If you are a representative of your local union, and need assistance with registering a delegate, please contact your UAW Region’s office.

Will photographs or videos be taken?

Yes, we encourage everyone to take photos and videos to capture and share their moments at the conference.

However, we do ask you to be mindful of how your photos and videos reflect your union to the public prior to sharing. Be sure the photos and videos you take represent your learning and fellowship experience at Black Lake.

Additionally, for privacy, there are a few areas of the center where photos and videos are not permitted. All delegates will be informed of these areas at the opening session of the conference.

The UAW may share photos and videos of the conference to encourage others to attend! You will be asked to check a box for a Release Form for photographs and videos during registration.

We also appreciate your desire for privacy, so if you do not want to be in any photos or videos, please inform our staff immediately when you arrive at check-in.

If I am approved to attend, but have to cancel, is there a refund?

If you are member who was approved to attend, but are no longer able to, please contact your local union immediately.

Cancellations after the Refund Deadline are non-fundable.

We strongly encourage locals to replace approved delegates whenever there is a cancellation. In the event the local is not able to substitute with another member, the refund deadlines are identified in the Local Union Process Call Letter. If further assistance is needed, please contact your UAW Region’s office.
