Western New York State
Union, Business Initiative Recognized for Non-Traditional Child Care Program

The Alliance of Work/Life Professionals Innovative Excellence Awards Committee recognized the Western New York Family Care Consortium for its exemplary leadership in coordinating the efforts of a diverse group of employers and unions to put aside competitive issues and address a common need-non-traditional hours child care and quality child care.

The Alliance celebrated the Western New York consortium’s collaborative efforts in partnering with each other and in reaching out to the community to increase resources to the partners’ families.

The consortium is a model union-business initiative that works to create programs to support the needs of more than 13,000 union members and employees. Current UAW members of the consortium include: UAW Local 846 and American Axle and Manufacturing, UAW Local 424 and American Axle and Manufacturing, UAW Local 686 and Delphi Thermal Systems, and UAW Local 774 and General Motors Powertrain.

The initiative was launched in 1996 due to a lack of non-traditional and quality child care services in the area and a common desire to have a productive work force that has access to quality and affordable care. Programs developed include evening and late-night child care for children ages 6 weeks to 12 years, child care provider training program with in-home dependent care modules, and a full-day program for summer, holiday, and vacation care for children ages five to 12 years.

UAW Region 9 congratulates the 2001 Innovative Excellence Award winners. This award recognizes the leadership and commitment of organizations to promoting and improving work/family and personal life while also addressing organizational needs. These winners demonstrated a commitment to excellence with proven results.
