In October, Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., visited American Axle and Manufacturings new facility in Cheektowaga, N.Y. The purpose of the senators visit was to experience first hand what can be accomplished when management, union, government and community work together.
American Axles new facility has created 120 good- paying union jobs in western New York and has its vision set on future expansion. Both the union and management agree that the reality of this new facility would not have been realized without assistance from state, county, and local governments.
This new facility is world class, said Local 846 President Wayne Bieger. It offers the machining support to our sister plant in Tonawanda, N.Y. Tonawanda Forge supplies parts to Cheektowaga, and together we are actively seeking new business, he concluded.
Dennis Pawlik, shop chairman of Local 846, remarked on the success of the Cheektowaga launch. To transform an old Builders Square store and accelerate to full production in just 18 months is a tribute to all of the men and women at both Tonawanda and Cheektowaga.
When management, union and government work together with the promise of good-paying jobs, we can prove that we can and will take on the world competition, explained President Bieger. He concluded by stating, The area plants need to invite their elected officials into their facilities so they can see first hand what is being manufactured in their area and show them the activity that is taking place in the community.
