Region 8 members demonstrate for global justice

Region 8 leadership, members and retirees turned out by the hundreds April 9 and 12 in Washington, DC to demonstrate for global justice.

On April 9, the UAW and other labor unions joined church groups in their Jubilee 2000 USA mobilization rally. Demonstrators braved cold wind and snow to call for the cancellation of the debts of African, Latin American, Asia Pacific, and Caribbean countries.

Al Lloyd, Region 8 CAP representative, reported that members came from Local 919 of Norfolk, Va., Local 2123 of Fredericksburg; Va., Locals 149 and 1748 of Winchester, Va., and Local 2999 of Strasburg, Va.; Local 1590 of Martinsburg, W.Va.; Locals 239, 738 and 66 of Baltimore and Local 354 of Salisbury, Md.; Locals 1183, 404 and 1212 of Newark and Local 435 of Wilmington, Del., plus staff from the five-state area.

On April 12, UAW members and leadership returned to the nation’s capital for an AFL-CIO sponsored Lobby Day and Rally that drew 15,000 union members. Many Region 8 members attended both events. The Region 8 delegation came from the five surrounding states plus Alabama to oppose Congress granting permanent normal trade relations status to China. Members lobbied their members of Congress while attending the rally. They explained to each member of Congress our opposition to the PNTR bill.
