My Union...My Friend
A Poem by Kathy Ford, UAW Loca1 442 member

For many years, I worked in a discount store,
Had few benefits, a small pension,
the wages were poor.
After 11 years, I left in a huff,
Tried a couple more jobs, the market was rough.

I applied at the plant, got a call the first week,
Had my interview and physical, everything was complete.
I started with fears of making probation,
On my 66th day, I had a mental celebration.
That day I signed the card...a UAW member I became,

Little did I know, I’d found a friend in the same.
The benefits they were many, the pension not so bad,
The wages I was earning, the most I ever had.
My seniority it meant something, I could even bid,
I liked my new friend...My union, and all that it did.

The years have gone by, and I’ve done my part,
I answered my union’s call, been involved from the start.
I’ve had a few problems, filed a grievance or two,
My friend stuck by me, and our friendship grew.
I’ve been through five contracts, a strike, been laid off,
Several name changes, and the rules change a lot.

One thing’s never changed; yes, it’s still there,
My union...My friend, ever strong, ever cares.
My friend fights for safety, equal rights, and what’s just,
Follow the contract, treat people fairly, that is a must.

Several salary people, they once knew my friend,
Some, now as company, feel that friendship must end.
Now I hear stories of the meetings they must attend,
Hang their heads; bite their tongues, many must pretend.

They need to decide...between family and work,
Where is their pride? Where does it lurk?
With my friend I am proud, I hold my head high,
I thank God many times for the friend at my side.
Solidarity and strength, on my friend I depend,
I will always love you...My union...My friend.
