Retiring Director Korman’s Final Report
'I Will Never Retire From the Labor Movement'

Paul KormanAfter announcing my retirement, which was on June 1, I received quite a few calls asking: “Why?” First of all, let me say that I am in relatively good health and hopefully will continue to be. The decision to retire was actually made about a year ago.

While I am retiring as director of Region 4, like many of you, I will never retire from the UAW or the labor movement. I’m sure there will be times that I will visit a picket line or attend a UAW meeting if I’m called to do so.

This is my last article for the Region 4 insert of the UAW’s Solidarity magazine. Space does not permit me to reminisce about the years spent doing all the things that I have thoroughly enjoyed. I have also enjoyed the many friends and leaders I have met over the years. I hope that I have made positive contributions toward building our region in the years to come.

As I thought about what to write in my final article as director, it occurred to me that I have been privileged to appoint almost half of the current Region 4 staff. Their dedication is one of the reasons that our region stands head and shoulders above many. We are also fortunate to have a constant stream of qualified leadership coming up through the ranks of our locals. They are young, energetic, and dedicated to the causes of the movement we are all a part of.

I have also been very fortunate to have an assistant director who has a wide range of experience in our region. I often kid Dennis Williams about being a good student, but I know he has all the qualifications to continue the great traditions of our region.

Let me close by saying that we can look back with pride at many of the accomplishments we have made together over the years. Leadership in the labor movement requires constant vigilance, and our work is never done. There are powerful forces in this country that want to silence both our voice and our vote.

I want to thank the staff and all the members of Region 4 for those things we have accomplished and ask for your support and assistance for our new Director Dennis Williams as he continues the work that is left to be done.

In Solidarity,
Paul Korman
