Where Workers Learn Union Skills
Region
4s 2001 summer school will be held in two separate sessions. The
basic week runs July 22-27. The advanced week will be held August 5-10.
As he did last year, Region 4 Director Paul Korman will be on hand to
welcome the 300 delegates who are expected to attend one or the other
of the sessions comprising this years annual regional summer school
held at the Pat Greathouse Education Center in Ottawa, Ill.
Basic week is designed for new UAW members and newly activated members.
Workshops will cover organizing new members, union involvement, and labor
history, which will feature former Region 4 Director and UAW Vice President
Pat Greathouse.
Advanced week is aimed at current local union leadership. These delegates
will receive training in labor law related to organizing and collective
bargaining, time management, labor history (also with Pat Greathouse),
health and safety regulations, and running local union elections.
Contact
your local union president if you are interested in attending one of this
years Region 4 summer school weeks.
To give you an idea of what to expect at a Region 4 summer school, here
is what some delegates said about last years program:
I really enjoyed these five days. We were given a lot of information.
Now we need to take it back to our locals and make a difference.
We even discussed our class topics at night on our own time.
It was great to hear about how other locals handle their problems.
Every member should be required to attend one week of summer
school. It expands your view of the world around you and makes you think.
This week makes me even more proud to be a member of the UAW.
The whole experience convinced me that each of us can make a difference.
