A UAW visionary
A Special Birthday Greeting for Pat Greathouse

Although retired International Vice President and former Region 4 Director Pat Greathouse lives in Detroit, he still enjoys coming back to the education center that he purchased for the UAW in 1949 and was named in his honor.

Greathouse says he gets great satisfaction from observing current and future leaders of our union coming together at the Pat Greathouse Education Center in Ottawa, Ill., to discuss issues and educate themselves on the challenges we face. During his presentations on labor history, he often explains how difficult it was to do this before Region 4 had its own educational facility.

Last year, Greathouse attended the retiree leadership training weeks, the women’s conference, and all regional summer schools. During the week of June 19, delegates discovered that it was Greathouse’s 85th birthday. They had a huge cake made for him. Greathouse was pleased that his fellow retirees “made such a big deal about my birthday.”

Greathouse is a pioneer of the UAW and one of the treasures of our great region. A charter member of UAW local 551, representing workers at the Ford Chicago assembly plant, Greathouse was a member of our union’s International Executive Board from 1947 to 1980. He served as Region 4 director for nine years and then was elected UAW vice president in 1956.

Greathouse was one of the first union leaders to recognize the growth of multi-national corporations and the rise of the global economy. In 1977, he became co-chairman of the UAW’s International Affairs Dept. and traveled extensively around the world, developing personal relationships with labor leaders in many countries. Since his retirement in 1980, Greathouse has continued to attend seminars and lecture on a variety of labor subjects in the U.S. and abroad.
