The 19th annual Sam Duncan Scholarship Awards Dinner was held in June.

The Flint-based fund was established as a permanent memorial to the life of Sam Duncan, past president of UAW Local 598, whose life enriched others through his commitment to the well being of others.

The fund was started by a coalition of UAW members and community leaders shortly after Duncan’s death.

Duncan spent his final years in a wheelchair as a result of injuries he suffered in World War II. Until the time of his death he was actively involved in his local union and with many community concerns.

This scholarship fund is unique because money is awarded only to people with physical disabilities. The scholarships are given to assist disabled students in working towards their life and employment goals. The Duncan fund is a non-profit organization that has no administrative costs. One hundred percent of all funds raised go to provide assistance.

The Scholarship Awards dinner, an annual bingo night, and an "Evening to Remember" talent showcase are the three major fund-raisers for the fund. This year, Easter Seals became a special sponsor.

This year the board of directors awarded a total amount of $13,750 in scholarships to 11 students. Recipients are asked to make a moral commitment to the fund in the future, so that others may also benefit from it.
