V-P tells union leaders
'We must be a part of setting the agenda for America'

UAW Vice President Richard ShoemakerIn July UAW Vice President Richard Shoemaker reminded an audience of local union leadership representing General Motors workers of their obligations, both under the UAW constitution and as American citizens, to become part of the electoral process. "We must be a part of setting the agenda for America," he said.

Recognizing the rich history of Region 1C and the impact our members have had on the labor movement, Shoemaker pointed out that the actions of union members, both past and present, have affected great economic and social change throughout our communities.

He warned us that of all the challenges we have met, both individually and collectively, there will be none greater than being successful in November.

Region 1C local union leaders
Region 1C local union leaders were reminded of their obligations to be politically involved.

As union members, we must insist that a national debate take place in union halls and neighborhoods to discuss the true needs of America. Every citizen, not just politicians, must debate providing affordable health care for all Americans and our place in the world economy. We must also give freely of our time in working for the candidates and issues that are important to us.

If we do all this and if we do our job right, Shoemaker told the local union leaders, then "we will be able to tell our grandchildren that we have left this world a better place than we found it."

To find out what you can do to help, call your local union officers, CAP committee members, or your nearest sub-regional office.
