Hoyt Emerson Honored
Long Union Career Comes to an End

Hoyt Emerson
Congratulating retiring International Representative Hoyt Emerson are Jeannie Jevons and Sharon McDonald.
When he retired in March, Hoyt Emerson was the highest seniority UAW international representative of all, having serviced Region 1C membership in Lenawee County for 37 years.

Emerson became an active member of the UAW when he hired into the Deerfield Revco Refrigeration plant in 1952. He served his local union in many capacities from shop steward to committee chair before being appointed to the staff of the international union in 1963.

Emerson was also busy in his community. He served as county campaign co-chair for the Lenawee County United Fund, on the Salvation Army advisory board, and on the Lenawee County Economic Development Commission.

In 1983 Emerson was appointed by Adrian Mayor Alden Smith to chair a citizen’s committee to investigate the high rates of natural gas. As a result of that investigation, the Public Service Commission ordered a roll back in rates to the public by 22 percent.

Doug Spade, state representative of Michigan’s 57th District, Beverly Hammerstrom, state senator of the 17th District, and Governor John Engler signed special proclamations recognizing Emerson.
