Sheriff awards local hero

Genesee County Sheriff Bob Pickell presented a lifesaving award at a February membership meeting to Local 599 member Steve Collins for his efforts in saving a fellow employee last December at Flint’s Great Lakes Tech Center.

A trained paramedic who volunteers as a first responder at his worksite, Collins responded to a 911 call concerning Vern Kantor, an engineer, who had stopped breathing.

When Collins arrived on the scene, other workers were performing CPR. Checking Kantor’s vitals, Collins found no pulse and immediately readied the defibrillator. He administrated three shocks before Kantor began breathing. By this time additional first responders and members of the Flint Fire Department arrived. Further care was administered, and Kantor was taken by ambulance to the hospital.

Along with several other co-workers involved in this heroic event, Collins will receive a special award that will be presented by his local union in a ceremony on Workers Memorial Day.

Local 963
Highway cleanup

A highway located two miles north of the Michigan-Ohio border on M-52, just south of Jasper, Mich., is a lot cleaner today thanks to the involvement of Local 963 members. An amalgamated local located in Adrian, Local 963 members took on the task of making their community a nicer place to live in 1992.

Local 1294
Can do

Members of Unit 1 of amalgamated Local 1294 representing employees at the Calhoun County 37th Circuit Court (Battle Creek area) gave a resounding "can do" to a special year-long fundraising effort.

Court workers enforce support orders and visitation complaints as well as issuing and executing bench warrants. They pledged to collect pop cans throughout this year.

They hope that money generated from the cans as well as other donations will allow them to adopt several families during the 2000 Christmas season.
