Our stories are just a click away
The I Am the UAW advertising campaign puts a human face on our union and tells real-life stories of our UAW members.
Starting out in 2007 with five 30-second TV broadcast, cable and Internet commercials featuring UAW members, the campaign has evolved to a permanent Web site where all members can send in stories in written, audio or video format.
The Web site, www.IAmtheUAW.org, is the union’s way of letting Americans know that UAW members not only live and work in their communities but care about their friends and neighbors, too. Every day UAW members work to improve their communities as well as their workplaces. This Web site is one way of sharing the stories that come out of that activism.
Here is a sampling:
“UAW member and environmentalist Jeff Gearhart at the Ann Arbor Ecology Center is taking a careful look at toys being manufactured. … His goal? To identify products and toys that contain harmful chemicals … educate parents and consumers on how to avoid purchasing these toys, and address the legislation that protects the public from these toxic substances.”
UAW Local 38
“I would like to tell you about a new retiree … that has started a new FREE health clinic in his community. He said when he retired his top goal of retirement was to do this. The paint department in our plant recently passed the hat and contributed $1,800 to the clinic. The clinic was started with volunteer health professionals and is already serving a huge need.”
Brett Molitor, Local 2209
“UAW Local 1296, Waynesboro, Pa., established their Veterans Committee in the local union during the fall of 2007. It didn’t take the committee long to start their fund raisers in the plant (for) the veterans at the Martinsburg VA Medical Center. … Through the generosity of the membership money was raised to purchase books, crossword puzzles, razors, soap and other items.”
John Davis, Local 1296
