We are the UAW
With more than 512,000 active members and more than 569,000 retirees, the UAW is one of the nation's largest unions. And more than one of every four UAW members is female.
Our members are in more than 800 local unions. We currently negotiate more than 1,300 contracts with more than 1,400 employers in the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada. There are approximately 20,000 UAW members in Puerto Rico and 2,300 in Canada.
The UAW is affiliated with the American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), the International Metal-workers Federation (IMF) and the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC).
The AFL-CIO includes 10.5 million workers in 56 national and international unions. The ITUC is composed of 230 union federations in 152 countries with 150 million members. Based in Geneva, Switzerland, the IMF represents 25 million metalworkers in more than 200 unions in 100 countries.
Union for All Workers
Our union was chartered Aug. 26, 1935, as the United Automobile Workers of America. Since then, the UAW has become a Union for All Workers.
While still representing skilled and production workers in the automotive and parts suppliers sectors, the UAW also represents workers in aerospace and defense, heavy trucks, and farm and heavy equipment.
Other manufacturing workers we represent make household appliances, beer, lawn and garden equipment, tools and hardware, firearms, boats, modular housing, toys, musical instruments, pharmaceuticals, canned food, butter, coffee, nuts, bathroom fixtures, home furnaces and water heaters. UAW members also work in car dealerships.
Our Technical, Office and Professional sector represents workers in state and local government, universities, hospitals, media, technical and design centers, libraries, museums, casinos, and legal services for the poor — and in the home as free-lance writers and child-care providers.
