The victory at Dana is powerful evidence that the majority of workers want union representation. |
EMPLOYEE FREE CHOICE ACT Midterm election results may be key to passageIs Texas tough on unions? Not when workers have a free choice. The card-check victory for workers at the Dana Corp. facility in Longview, Texas, is powerful evidence that the majority of workers want union representation. That’s why union-busting forces are fighting the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) legislation. The EFCA would require employers to recognize unions through a card-check procedure, when a majority of workers sign union cards. It would also stiffen the penalties when bosses violate workers’ rights. Employers often seek to draw out representation elections as long as possible and hold mandatory captive audience meetings in which employers often threaten to move the jobs to low-cost areas if workers exercise their legal right to form a union. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has stepped up its lobbying in support of a law that would make card checks illegal. The anti-union business group is circulating a briefing book to legislators attacking union organizing efforts. At press time, 210 representatives and 42 senators supported the EFCA (H.R. 1696 and S. 842). With upcoming congressional elections, your votes can change the power structure in Congress. This is a good time to consider how worker-friendly your candidates are. It’s going to take a majority of legislators to get these bills passed into law. The EFCA ensures fairness in union organizing, and the best way to win this struggle is to elect representatives who support working families. |
