For the record

UAW Local 164 member Troy Bigelow, featured in Workers’ Words (January-February 2006) does not work for Dana Corp. Brother Bigelow works for Eaton, which purchased the Dana facility.

Also in that issue’s Organizing Roundup, we misidentified locals representing workers at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. Those members are represented by UAW Locals 2500, 1781, 2145 and 2256.

Delphi problems are nothing new

I’ve just finished reading my latest Solidarity (January-February 2006), and, as usual, am steaming.

I’ve been retired from Chrysler Corp. since 1982. Those were hairy times for us all, and I can identify with the problems our members are having today.

But I personally do not recall Chrysler executives walking away with millions of dollars like those at Delphi Corp.

The rich get richer, and the poor get poorer. Keep fighting, and maybe our members will soon realize we cannot support big business with our votes.

Save some jobs

Today my newspaper said Ford Motor Co. was cutting 30,000 jobs.
Why? Look around you. As I drive our roads, I look at all the cars out there, and you know what? Very few are American-made vehicles. Shouldn’t that tell you something?

Buy American. Save some jobs.

Health care for all

The United States is the richest country in the world, yet we cannot afford to take care of our own people. I am sick and tired of hearing all the politicians say we cannot afford to have national health care. If we can look after the rest of the world, then surely we can provide health care for our people.

It’s time to take care of America. We need to vote for people who support national health insurance, raising the minimum wage and protecting jobs here. Your vote counts.

Surviving pension greed

President Franklin D. Roosevelt said it best: “People acting together as a group can accomplish things which no individual acting alone could ever hope to bring about.”

Will our unions survive to remain the strongest defensive front line against takeaway corporate pension greed? You better believe it!

Workers’ Words, values

Your new Workers’ Words feature (January-February 2006) is said to “showcase the creativity of UAW members, active and retired.” I’d like to comment on your initial offering by Troy Bigelow of Local 164.

If these are the kind of “moral values” he is passing down to his children, I hope his values are not shared by many.

I have never seen abortion, gay marriage or gun control condemned by a union publication.

I was impressed by Troy Bigelow’s piece in your January-February issue. As a retiree, I also know what his grandparents are going through, as we are experiencing many of the same things with our health benefits.

As a Christian, all I can say is put it in the hands of the Lord.
