Democracy flourishes with workers’ voice
(After World War II) General Douglas MacArthur was appointed supreme commander (to restructure Japan). Here was a staunch right-wing Republican. ... Yet with all his right-wing politics he decided to include collective bargaining in the restructuring of Japan. Why? Because the general knew that for democracy to flourish in a society, workers needed to have a collective voice. MacArthur wanted Japan to succeed and for that to happen the workers had to have the right to unionize.
