A new year with new opportunities
As we begin this new year, we know we face many challenges — challenges made all the more difficult by last year’s election results.
Most of us are deeply disappointed with the outcome of the presidential election because we know that when workers vote against their economic interests, it is much tougher to be successful at the bargaining table.
However, we want to acknowledge the hard work of our local union members, retiree chapters, Community Action Program councils, staff and clerical throughout the campaign. The International Executive Board recognizes your commitment and dedication, and for that we are very appreciative.
We remain committed to negotiating good contracts for our members and to continuing to strive for an America where our children all have equal opportunities, and all Americans have the chance for a good-paying job with decent benefits and a secure retirement.
That means we will not give up our fight for affordable health care, fair trade agreements and stronger laws to protect workers’ right to organize. Neither will we give up the fight for those issues that are so important to our seniors.
Now there’s no doubt that the election results mean that attaining these goals will be more difficult. But complaining will get us nowhere.
We will move forward, as this union always has done, and we have no choice but to roll up our sleeves and continue to work to develop plans and programs based on the realities we face. In the past we have been successful by standing together, and through our solidarity we will face our challenges with renewed vision, strength and resolve.
We thank you for your continued support, and on behalf of the International Executive Board, we extend our best wishes for a happy and healthy new year to the families of our active members and retirees.
May the new year bring new opportunities to strengthen our union and better the lives of America’s workers.
