New Twists at CAP Conference

by Jennifer John

There are some changes on tap for this year's UAW CAP Legislative Conference: fewer speakers, no workshops and more delegates. The annual gathering runs Feb. 2-5 at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, D.C.

UAW President Ron Gettelfinger opens the conference with the keynote address. About 1,800 UAW delegates are expected to attend.

For the first time, the event will feature a Joint International Union Conference with 2,000 delegates from the USWA, UNITE, PACE, CWA and UMW who will join UAW delegates for a day at the Washington Hilton.

AFL-CIO President John Sweeney opens the joint conference, which will focus on health care, labor law reform and trade. That afternoon, the entire delegation — nearly 4,000 union workers — will head to Capitol Hill to lobby their senators and representatives on these and other issues.
