Gleaners Community Food Bank distributes more than 1 million pounds of food
to 300 social service agencies in southeastern Michigan. On Nov. 4, 2002,
the Nate Gooden and John Franciosi Hand in Hand Foundation aided their effort.
UAW Vice President Nate Gooden heads the union’s DaimlerChrysler Department. Franciosi is senior vice president of employee relations for DaimlerChrysler.
Gooden stressed that “today, more Americans are going to work, yet still can’t afford to feed their families. With this contribution, Gleaners Community Food Bank can help reduce hunger in our community by bringing nourishing, healthful food to more people.”
For 25 years Gleaners has gathered food from farmers, grocery stores, supermarkets, food distributors and food processors, from individuals and through canned food drives and distributed it to those in need.
“In America today, nearly one in 10 Americans is hungry. Forty-nine percent of the hungry are children and seniors,” said Gooden. “Every day, many children go to school hungry, and many seniors have to choose between food, rent or medical needs. As we all know, current economic shortfalls place more emphasis on individual, corporate and labor contributions to help.”
“This generous donation will help Gleaners provide 320,000 meals to our hungry neighbors in need,” said Fernandes. “We are grateful for the support of the UAW and DaimlerChrysler in helping us nourish our community by feeding hungry people.
