Action Alert
These are trying times with decisions on important issues that affect you hanging in the balance. Action by you and your union brothers and sisters can make a difference in many ways. Here are some of the things where your action can help:
Everyone’s an organizer
Remember, every member of the UAW can make an impact in organizing, from showing
the difference a union can make through example, to talking your union up
among friends. Whenever someone expresses an interest in organizing their
workplace, get them in contact with your local union president or have them
call the National Organizing Department at 313-926-5461.
Peterbilt lockout
In August, heavy truck builder Peterbilt locked out 500 members
of UAW Local 1832 in Madison, Tenn. The UAW has filed a WARN
Act lawsuit against PACCAR, the parent company of Peterbilt.
We ask you to call David Hovind, vice chairman of PACCAR,
at 425-468-7400 to ask him to end the lockout. You can also
e-mail him at dhovind@paccar.com.
For more information on the lockout, go to www.uaw.org/action/peterbilt.html.
Consumer protection
To observe National Consumer Protection Week Feb. 2-8, the UAW Consumer Affairs
Department urges you to protect your high-speed Internet access (cable or
DSL) from hackers. Use anti-virus software, install a firewall and use passwords
that have at least eight characters, including numerals or symbols. For further
information, call Consumer Affairs at 313-926-5269.
Affirmative action
The U.S. Supreme Court will hear the lawsuit against the University of Michigan
over affirmative action in late March or early April. The UAW supports the
U-M in this case. Activists are now circulating petitions in support of the
U-M and are organizing a march on the Supreme Court when the case is scheduled
to come up. If you want to help, contact BAMN online at www.bamn.com
or write to P.O. Box 32767, Detroit, MI 48232.
Children’s labor lit
It’s never too early to help children understand why
organized labor is important. Titles such as “Click,
Clack, Moo — Cows that Type,” “The Bobbin
Girl” and “Si, Se Puede — Yes, We Can!”
are available through LabourStart.org
because of their partnership with Powells.Com,
the unionized bookshop.
Get on the wall
There’s still time to add your name to the Michigan Labor Legacy Wall
of Honor at the Labor Legacy Landmark. Your tax-deductible donation will help
to build this historic monument to labor being constructed in downtown Detroit.
To find out how to add your name or that of a friend to the wall, call 313-961-0800.
