Bunn, Wheeler Support Workers in Puerto Rico

By Larry Gabriel

UAW Secretary-Treasurer Elizabeth Bunn, accompanied by UAW Region 9A Director Phil Wheeler, visited Puerto Rico at the end of July to meet with workers and government officials.

Bunn and UAW International Representative Fernando Juarbe met with Treasury Department workers, who have long expressed their wish to be represented by the UAW, but the treasury secretary has delayed an election. Among others, Bunn met with Sub-Secretary of the Department of Labor and Human Resources Vilma Molina to discuss the situation of Treasury workers.

“Our experience in Puerto Rico and elsewhere is that when the workers have the freedom to express their desires, they elect the representation of a union,” Bunn told a Puerto Rican newspaper reporter.

“Because of the history of democracy in Puerto Rico, the employers must give the workers the opportunity to express themselves without intimidation.”
