Julia Yokich and her son, Steve.
Rebecca Cook

Julia Yokich and her son, Steve.

Family, friends and union always seemed to come in the same package for Steve Yokich.

Both of his parents were union activists and his mother, Julia Yokich, was fond of telling people that she took him out to his first picket line when he was just 22 months old. At the UAW Constitutional Convention in June, after letting some rough language slip, Steve would pause and remark that he’d be hearing about that later from mom.

It is no surprise that a man so dedicated to his work would find many of his friendships in the same center. And that some friendships could go far back to a neighborhood on the east side of Detroit where working-class families looked to the future with new hope because they were union.

“I can’t find the words that tell you how grateful I am to all of you and all the members of the UAW for giving me this opportunity to serve this union.”

Stephen P. Yokich
33rd UAW Constitutional Convention,
June 2002
