A thank-you letter to my grandpa

Awhile back, Stephen A. Yokich made a friendly wager with his 15-year-old son, Michael, that if he kept up his grades, he’d buy him some new irons.

Michael, a high school sophomore, brought home a 3.7 average.

So Stephen A. called his father, Grandpa Yokich, and asked him to order a set of left-handed Powerbilt Grand Slam irons, built by UAW Local 251 in Wallaceburg, Ont.

Grandpa Yokich said he’d pay for the clubs.
Michael used the irons for the first time at the Aug. 3 Community Caring golf outing at Black Lake Golf Club, playing in his grandfather’s foursome.

About a week after the outing, Michael’s dad asked him if he’d written grandpa a thank-you note yet. He hadn’t. Michael was told that he couldn’t use the clubs again until he wrote the note.

Michael wrote it on Aug. 14. But he never mailed it.

Dear Grandpa, I would like to thank you very much for buying the Powerbilt Grand Slam irons for me. My mom would not let me do anything until I wrote this letter to you, and my dad wouldn’t let me play golf until I had written this letter. The irons are much better than my previous clubs. Thanks again for buying me those clubs. I hope to play in the scramble again with you next year. Love always, Mike
