Two new voters
Trevor Bridges, who works at the Ford assembly plant in Chicago, says prior to contract language that gave UAW members a holiday on Election Day, he had never voted. “After we got that in the contract, it actually was the first time that I voted,” he said. “As a matter of fact, it was the first time my wife voted, too.”
Now not only does Bridges vote, but he uses the day to encourage family members to go to the polls as well.
“Steve and others fought for this and got it for us so I figured that I might as well take advantage of it.”
Trevor Bridges is a member of UAW Local 551.
Gift of leadership
“Steve Yokich was a relentless advocate for workers across this country and throughout the world. I was deeply saddened to hear of his death. I remember he used to talk about how proud he was of his Lebanese and Serbian heritage. Wherever he got his gift of leadership, the working citizens of this country have lost a powerful and dedicated force on their behalf. I have lost a friend, and my condolences go out to Julia, Tekla, Tracey and Stephen during this difficult time.”

A special passion
“Steve will be remembered by many as a savvy and effective fighter for justice and dignity, one who fought for working people across the board — especially those in his beloved UAW family.
“He will be remembered for bringing a special passion to every battle he waged. And he certainly won many — always on behalf of the people who most needed an effective and committed champion.
“ I cherish Steve’s memory in all these ways. But I will also remember Steve as I saw him in quiet moments, as someone who understood in his bones the value of family, loyalty and friendship.”
Al Gore is the former vice president of the United States.
