Walter and May Reuther Family Scholarship Program 2002
We Learn Best by Doing

We Learn Best by Doing
Dietrich Floeter

Those five words sum up the spirit behind the UAW’s Family Scholarship program at the Walter and May Reuther Family Education Center on Black Lake near Onaway, Mich.

Every year UAW members bring their families to this beautiful, 1,100 acre center for a weeklong learning experience in July and early August.

Through lively discussion and interactive exercises, members, their spouses and older children explore the role the UAW has played in advancing the rights of people as workers and citizens.

Meeting UAW families from other regions and backgrounds is an enriching experience that leaves everyone better prepared to carry forward our rich heritage.

Black LakeBesides learning, there’s plenty of time for fun.

The Black Lake facility offers opportunities for softball, tennis, swimming, hikes through the woods, volleyball, basketball and workouts.

In addition, the UAW center offers 18 holes of great golf (at discounted rates for members) and the fun Little Course.

Built in harmony with the natural beauty of northern Michigan, the course has been heralded by Golf Digest as one of the finest anywhere in the country. And it is.
And the food--both in the dining hall and at the golf course’s clubhouse--is plentiful and delicious.

The cost? The program, lodging and food are free. Transportation for people traveling over 1,000 miles round trip is partially subsidized.

For UAW members, this is the experience of a lifetime.
