It was close, but UAW Local 235 edged Local 7 for a 49-46 victory to capture the UAW Southeastern Michigan Basketball League championship on March 25 at River Rouge High School in River Rouge, Mich.

At end of the regular 10-week season, teams were split into two divisions based on their records. Those in the bottom half, with records under .500, played those in the top half, who had records of .500 and above. Winners of each division moved on to the final championship game.

With a 7-2-1 record, Local 7 was in the top half of the bracket, while Local 235 was the “underdog” in the bottom with a 3-6-1 record.

The basketball league is part of the union’s Recreation Department, which develops recreational programs for UAW workers and their families. Activities include golf, bowling, softball, archery, billiards, pottery and others.

Both locals are in UAW Region 1.
