Black Lake Golf Club Set to Open for 2001 Season

Story by Jennifer John

Black Lake Golf ClubLess than a year after its grand opening last June, the UAW’s Black Lake Golf Club heads into its second season already being recognized as one of the best public courses in America.

The course, which is on 300 acres of the Walter and May Reuther Family Education Center near Onaway, Mich., has been piling up awards for 2001: Golf Digest named it runner-up for best new upscale public golf course in the country and the best public course in Michigan. Golf Magazine selected it among the top 10 new courses you can play nationally.

Pam Phipps, director of golf at Black Lake, wasn’t surprised at the accolades.

“From the moment I saw the course, I knew it was one of the best courses in the country,” she said. “It’s a credit to President Yokich and the International Executive Board for the vision they had to build a golf course that UAW members can be proud of.”

Black Lake Golf Club, designed by acclaimed architect Rees Jones, may open as early as the end of April, weather permitting.

The summer season begins May 19, with rates through Sept. 9 for 18 holes and a cart as follows:

  • UAW members pay $55.
  • UAW retirees can golf for $45.
  • UAW guests can play for $65.
  • For the general public, greens fees are $95.

Golf packages with accommodations are available and include two nights lodging and two rounds of golf with a cart, complimentary range balls before you play, and one round of golf per person on the Little Course (a nine-hole, par-3 pitch-and-putt layout).

Two- and three-bedroom full-service condominiums are also available.

When staying overnight, UAW guests must be accompanied by a UAW member.
