Credit card firms cheer Bush on bankruptcy bill
Credit card companies like MBNA America Bank, which donated heavily to George Bush’s campaign, are ecstatic about the bankruptcy bill which Bush promises to sign if it passes Congress. The UAW opposes this one-sided bill, which was vetoed by President Clinton at the end of last year because it would make it more difficult for families experiencing financial distress to obtain relief under the bankruptcy laws. It would unfairly elevate the interests of credit card companies at the expense of individuals who are in financial distress because they have lost their jobs or experienced medical crises.

NLRB may undergo huge political shift
The direction of the National Labor Relations Board is “about to change dramatically,” predicts Charles I. Cohen, a former NLRB member. By August, Bush will have appointed four board members (on a five-person panel) and a general counsel. Cohen predicts that four of the five Bush appointees will be Republicans.

GOP tax plan is rushed through Congress
The Republicans are so anxious to push their tax plan through Congress that lawmakers aren’t being given a chance to digest it. The Wall Street Journal noted that even the House’s normally well-prepared tax experts lacked ready answers to basic questions including one on the income distributive effects of the GOP cuts.

Labor opposes fig leaf on trade
Later this year the Bush administration is expected to ask Congress to approve fast track trade legislation. Some businesses want to include a fig leaf on the issues of labor and environmental protections to win broader support in Congress. The UAW and our allies in the Citizen Trade Campaign say that window dressing is unacceptable. In our judgment, worker rights and environmental protections must be included in the core text of trade agreements and must be enforceable through trade sanctions—just like commercial interests.
