Yokich chided President Clinton for calling this latest trade deal with China "a 100-percent win for America." He reminded the crowd that Clinton said the same thing about NAFTA, the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Yokich reminded the union legions that "eloquent speeches can’t do the job. You have to do your part and carry the message to Congress."

UAW jacket-clad activists then fanned out throughout the halls of Congress to do just that, buoyed by the release of a new national poll showing that 65 percent of registered voters oppose "granting China permanent trade access to the U.S. market with no annual review of China’s human rights and trade record."

And though the Republican leadership in Congress is strongly backing this corporate scam, the survey shows that 75 percent of registered Republicans oppose permanent NTR with China.

In the Rayburn House Office Building, a delegation from five UAW Massachusetts locals literally overflowed the office of undecided lawmaker Richard Neal, D-Mass. Local 2322 member Tim Scott said, "It’s important that you really listen to us."

Earlier at the rally, AFL-CIO President John Sweeney pointed out that the day’s activities were "part of a long-term campaign to make the global economy work for working families."
