It's your money. Don't let anyone gamble it away!President Bush is saying that Social Security soon will be bankrupt, and that workers and retirees won’t get the benefits promised under the program. He hopes this crisis atmosphere will scare the public into supporting his plan to divert a portion of Social Security payroll taxes into individual accounts. The truth is, there is no immediate financing crisis. In fact, Social Security has sufficient funds to pay all promised benefits for almost 40 years. Although it may face a relatively small deficit after that time, this can be solved through minor adjustments in the program’s financing. There is simply no need to dismantle the program as proposed by President Bush. Indeed, diverting a portion of Social Security payroll taxes to individual accounts will only make the long-term financing problems worse. This section of the UAW Web site presents the facts and the myths about Social Security. It also provides information on how you can help save Social Security by preventing the kind of risky, costly privatization plans being promoted by President Bush and the Republican leadership in Congress.
