Honoring a lifetime of activism

Charles SheppardWhen Charles Sheppard went to work for Chrysler in 1964 he began a long career as a trade unionist. He was the first African American to hold the office of union steward of Local 1226. As chairman of the local’s Fair Employment Practices Committee, Sheppard fought for equal opportunity for all workers. Later, as an executive board member-at-large, he encouraged others to continue that struggle.

For his efforts, Sheppard was awarded the UAW Region 3 Diversity Award at the eighth annual Diversity Dinner in January.

“Diversity promotes understanding and acceptance for all people, said Sheppard. “Our differences make us stronger and help build communities. The UAW is committed to diversity. Without it, we cannot have solidarity.

Now retired, Sheppard remains active, servjng as co-chairman of the Buford Holt Nursing Home Group; vice chairman of the UAW Area 11 retiree chapter; chairman of the Local 1226 retiree chapter, and financial secretary of the Local 550 retiree chapter. He also sits on the Region 3 CAP Council Executive Board and is a member of the Retired Workers Advisory Council.

Sheppard is also a proud member of the Southside Democrats, is active in his church, and is a member of the Meridan Kessler Neighborhood Association, which focuses on supporting underprivileged young men.
