UAW retirees in Kentucky come through for kids

Bikes for needy childrenAmid the rows of bicycles, bags of donated food, toys and other items were UAW retirees in Kentucky helping to make the recent holiday season a memorable one for needy children and families.

Cliff Cantrell, chairman of the Eastern Kentucky Retired Workers Council, said the community project was well worth the time, given that every child left with a bike, toys -- and huge smiles.

A community project that also included the Burnside, Ky., Police Department and other community organizations and businesses, it originally was intended to help just one grade at the Burnside Elementary School with Christmas gifts.

“We told the school, ‘Let’s take a crack at all of them – siblings, too!’ said Cantrell, a retiree from Local 1853 in Spring Hill, Tenn.

Local businesses pitched in so that toys, bikes and a full Christmas dinner with all the trimmings were made available to the families.

Volunteers pose with Santa Some 300 UAW retirees volunteered to help Santa take the gifts to the children, he added.
