UAW President Ron Gettelfinger today issued this statement on the passing of Sen. Edward Kennedy:

"Our country has lost a great leader; the Senate has lost a master legislator; and UAW members have lost a devoted friend and true partner in the fight for social justice.

"Time and again, Ted Kennedy raised his strong voice on behalf of working families and minorities. He fought to open doors of opportunity for those who had been shut out of society, and worked tirelessly to make the American dream real for everyone, from all walks of life.

"Some people think the way to win a political debate is by shouting louder than the other side. Ted Kennedy knew better. He never abandoned his principles, but always respected his adversaries. As a result, he leaves behind a unique record of accomplishment in the U.S. Senate.

"Today, our thoughts and prayers are with members of the Kennedy family, who have given so much to our country. Tomorrow and in the future, UAW members will honor Ted Kennedy's legacy by working -- as he did, for so many years -- for a better America."
