Buy UAW-made and preserve union jobs

It goes without saying that you should support those who support you. Buying UAW-made consumer products and services is a great way to put that idea into practice.

Of course, we know that our members make the finest vehicles around. But did you know your brothers and sisters make water heaters, or beer, butter and ice cream? Our members also make pharmaceutical products, cappuccino machiness, flashlights and much, much more.

"As UAW members, we know how important it is to let people know that when they buy American, they make our country stronger," UAW President Ron Gettelfinger said. "The money spent on union-made goods pays for decent wages, benefits and working conditions and supports communities as well."

We've recently revamped the UAW-Made section of our Web site, so take a look. If we've missed a product or service, please hit the We Want to Know link on the UAW-Made page to tell us about it. People can't buy union unless they know what our brothers and sisters make.

And if you're in the Detroit area from May 16-18, be sure to check out the 2008 America@Work Union Industries Show at Cobo Hall. The show will have the largest-ever expo of union-made goods and services, as well as its first-ever union jobs fair.

The 70th annual version of the show has something for everyone -- from exciting exhibits to hands-on demonstrations of products to meeting the union workers who train guide dogs. And for the first time in the show's history, you will be able to buy high-quality union-made products at special show prices, including vehicles, tools, work clothes, appliances, building products -- all made with pride by our brothers and sisters.

There will be demonstrations about union jobs. You can learn what it takes to be an airline pilot or see what stagehands do to create special effects for movies. There will be special presentations by trainers in many apprenticeship programs sponsored by major craft unions. And there will be information on how to qualify for paid apprenticeship training.

Admission is free and there will be prize drawings and giveaways. In previous years, visitors have won cars, appliances, groceries, household goods, furniture, sporting equipment and a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

Can't make the show? No problem! In addition to the UAW-Made section of our Web site, check out the Union Label Web site. And if your local union or community organization is looking for the quality and reliability of a union printer, check out the Allied Label Web page for a nationwide directory.
