UAW members call for a fair contract at UAW-represented Ford dealer

UAW members are carrying out informational leafleting at Royal Oak Ford in Royal Oak, Mich., to inform consumers about the current state of labor relations at this business.

More than a year ago, a strong majority of technicians, service and parts workers, body shop repair personnel, and porters at Royal Oak Ford voted to become part of the UAW.

“Workers have elected a bargaining committee, made good faith proposals to management, and made every possible effort to negotiate a contract that will benefit workers and the company,” said Joe Peters, director of UAW Region 1. “But management has not met its obligation to bargain in good faith and reach an equitable agreement.”

More than a year after workers voted to form their own union there is still no signed agreement for workers at Royal Oak Ford.

Even while it has failed to negotiate in good faith, the management of Royal Oak Ford has advertised widely in print and on radio and television that it is the “only UAW-represented new car dealership in metro Detroit.” During this same time period, Royal Oak Ford has become the No.1 performing Ford dealership in Metro Detroit.

“Consumers have a right to know the real story at Royal Oak Ford,” said UAW Vice President Bob King, who directs the union’s Ford Department as well as its Independents, Parts and Suppliers Department. “It’s not right for this company to benefit from a public association with the UAW while they are privately refusing to negotiate in good faith with union members.”
