TO: Local Union Presidents and Recording Secretaries
SUBJECT: Workers Memorial Day

Greetings:

Safety: it’s about our lives and our families.

Each year on April 28, the labor movement observes Workers Memorial Day to honor those workers who have died on the job. This year’s theme is: “Good jobs. Safe jobs. It’s time.”

For all workers, there is nothing more important than a safe workplace. And, there is nothing more important to our union than ensuring our worksites are as safe as possible. We can be proud that the UAW is continuing to promote and provide health and safety training and programs in all sectors of our union. The UAW will also continue to negotiate contract language that expands workers’ rights in the area of health and safety.

Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, six UAW members were killed on the job in 2006 and there have been three fatalities in the first two months of 2007. This is a somber reminder to all of us that we must be ever vigilant.

We encourage UAW local unions to participate in Worker Memorial Day activities in their area and to distribute Worker Memorial Day education materials in their local unions.

If additional information is needed, please contact the UAW Health and Safety Department at (313) 926-5563.

Workplace health and safety is our top concern everyday – not just on April 28.

Fraternally,
Ron Gettelfinger
