TRAINING PROGRAMS Of the UAW Health and Safety Department

The programs listed below are funded by federal grants and are provided free of charge to a local union or workplace. Programs are available to UAW members, management and companies represented by the UAW, and can be conducted at your local union, regional office, or at your workplace. Training is conducted by the staff from the UAW Health and Safety Department and specially trained Local Union Discussion Leaders ( LUDL’s).

Right to Know/ Chemical Hazards

Required by Hazard Communication Standard

Contact your Local Chairperson4-hour Program
Tailored to your workplace this class covering general protections under the Right-to-Know Law, how to read material safety data sheets, specific health effects of chemicals at worksite, protections from chemical hazards.

Awareness Training for Health and Safety Committees

8 to 10-hour Program
Entitled “Building Effective Health and Safety Committees”, This course adds the following topics to the basic 4-hour Right-to-Know course described above: Rights and Responsibilities-How OSHA Works, Effective Health and Safety Committees, and Safety Hazards. Additional topics may be selected including: Workplace Inspections, Bloodborne Pathogens, Office Hazards, Methods for Controlling Hazards, and others.

Ergonomics

Reduce Worker Compensation cost for your workplace!

1-hour Shop Floor Awareness Presentation
This program targets shop floor employees. It focuses on basic ergonomic concepts and gives employees information about the training process that is being structured in their site. This program is offered after the Leadership Awareness Training Program has been completed.

4-hour Leadership Awareness Program
This program is for local unions and companies that are interested in establishing an ongoing ergonomic process. It is targeted at critical Union and Management Leadership who will be responsible for supporting and directing the ergonomic process. The program focuses on Ergonomics and the components of an effective ergonomic process. Prior to this program being conducted, an initial worksite needs assessment will be conducted by the Ergonomist from the UAW Health & Safety Department. The program can be conducted at the local union or workplace requesting the service.

40-hour Ergonomics Committee Job Analysis Training
This program is for local unions and companies that have completed the Leadership Awareness Training Program and are ready to begin to implement the ergonomic process. It is targeted to members of the ergonomics committee or Health and Safety committee responsible for job analysis and implementing ergonomic improvements. This program provides extensive training on:
· Ergonomic hazards and Cumulative Trauma Disorders (CTD’s);
· Job analysis to identify ergonomic hazards;
· Ergonomic principles of job design;
· Extensive hands-on practice in job analysis and job redesign.

Energy Lockout

Required by Lockout Standard

2 to 3-hour Awareness Program.

Emergency Response

Required by the HAZWOPER Standard

8-hour Awareness Program.
This course adds the following topics to the basic 4-hour Right to Know course: What to do in Case of an Emergency-HAZWOPER Requirements, Your Role in the Emergency Response Plan, Preventing Chemical Emergencies.

24-hour Industrial Emergency Response (Operations Level).
Hands-on training for employees that have to control or clean up chemical spills, leaks, or other emergencies. This course combines classroom discussion with hands-on exercises using personal protective equipment, spill control, air monitoring equipment, and incident command procedures.

8-hour Emergency Response Annual Refresher.

Confined Space Entry Training

3-hour Awareness Program.
This program covers hazard recognition and basic protections to use in confined space entry.

8-hour Confined Space Entry and Attendant Training.


OSHA Outreach Program

10 Hour OSHA Standards and Recognition— Application of Standards to improve the workplace.
7 required standards are covered.

30 Hour OSHA Standards and Recognition
More standards are covered. 24 hours are spent covering 7 required standards in more depth.

Powered Industrial Vehicle (Forklift) Train the Trainer.
This class includes the class room portion of PIV required training found in CFR 1910.178
