Support for Striking Spirit Pilots
On June 12 pilots at Spirit Airlines were forced out on strike. Spirit’s pre-tax margin ranks them as the most profitable U.S. airline – yet pay for their pilots has been frozen for almost four years, and is well below industry standards. The company’s proposal would require its pilots to work more hours and pay more for family health care coverage. For a profitable employer to attack its workers and their families is unconscionable. Management’s reckless push for givebacks also jeopardizes safety and service quality for the flying public.
The squeeze on pilots at Spirit threatens us all. It’s one more example of the corporate attack on the standard of living of American workers. There can be no sustainable economic recovery without rising incomes for all workers.
Spirit is a successful company because of the dedication and professionalism of its workers; those workers deserve to share in the success they have created. We call on Spirit management to return to the bargaining table and drop their concessionary demands. In their fight for a fair and equitable contract, Spirit pilots can count on the full support of UAW members.
