The 35th UAW Constitutional Convention is a historic event for our union, not only because we celebrate the UAW’s 75th anniversary, but because it’s a symbolic reminder of who we are.
We, the men and women of the UAW, gather for the same purpose: to secure a better future for America’s working families.
No matter what the proposed resolution, we hope that will be the final outcome. We aim to move the needle a little bit farther in the direction of the worker; to drive the agenda of the worker, and, yes, to stand united.
At each convention we usher in change. This year change comes as a bittersweet goodbye to the retiring International Executive Board members. They have sacrificed tremendously, have shown leadership in difficult times, and have been tireless, dedicated and courageous in their service not only to their union brothers and sisters, but to the communities where they work and live.
We salute them, their careers and their years of service. But most of all, we thank them. Their efforts have kept this union moving ahead.
Their collective negotiating skills are unmatched at the table, especially during one of the most devastating economic crises this country has faced in decades. Their commitment to growing, protecting and uplifting the membership is unwavering.
They are embarking on a welldeserved nretirement and will be sorely missed. Let their efforts not be in vain. Each of us has a role to play in this union.
It is time we take up the torch and continue the fight for social and economic justice.
