As a delegate to the 35th UAW Constitutional Convention, you will feel right at home. Detroit is the home of the UAW headquarters, and without a doubt it’s a union town.
For starters, Solidarity House, the home of the International Union, UAW, is located on East Jefferson Avenue, about three miles east of the convention center. The Detroit Three — Chrysler LLC, Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Corp. — remain firmly rooted in and around the metro Detroit area and still top the lists as “Top Employer” regionally.
Detroit sits in UAW Region 1, which covers the east side of Detroit, several nearby counties and parts of Ontario, just beyond the Detroit River.

From the early days of the union's history, UAW members fought to make Detroit a union town. |
We proudly tell the world that our membership includes autoworkers who produce just about everything from award-winning cars and trucks to innovative automotive panel systems to specialized interior components.
While we are talking about the “Motor City,” our membership isn’t limited to just the auto sector. Our members are part of the workforce in many industries all over town.
Nearby Dearborn is home to Greenfield Village, one of the area’s most popular attractions. Artisans there are UAW members. Greenfield Village and the Henry Ford Museum are located about three miles from the Hyatt Regency, Dearborn, where some delegates are staying during the convention.
Dealers, servers and other workers in Detroit’s three casinos – Greektown, MGM Grand Detroit and Motor City – are UAW members. So are workers in city government in Detroit and nearby suburbs. Our members also include state of Michigan workers, librarians, child care providers, and academic workers at Wayne State and Oakland universities.
We work for health care organizations such as Health Alliance Plan, Delta Dental, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network. Our members are paralegals with the city of Detroit and referees and lawyers in nearby Warren.
Our ranks include skilled maintenance workers at the Omni Hotel in Detroit, lawyers with Wayne County’s Friend of the Court, and a host of technical, office and professional workers and other proud UAW members in and around the city.
