UAW Region 1D Director Gerald Kariem recently received the 2012 Grand Rapids Community College Woodrick Diversity Learning Center’s Martha Reynolds Labor Giant Award.
The award is one of 13 Giant awards given annually by the community college that recognizes African-American individuals and/or organizations for exceptional contributions to shaping the history and quality of life of greater Grand Rapids.
“I am honored and humbled by this award,” said Kariem. “What I am able to accomplish is not the work of one individual but a reflection of the hard work of active and retired members of Region 1D and the continued support we receive from the Grand Rapids community.”
Kariem received the award on Jan. 28 at the 30th annual award presentation and dinner in Grand Rapids.
Reynolds, who as a UAW International Representative was committed to the union's Fair Employment Practices program and the Community Services department, opened doors to opportunities for Blacks in organized labor.
