This year marks the 50th year anniversary of the passage of the 1963 Federal Equal Pay law, but women are still paid less than men – even when they have similar education, knowledge, seniority and experience and because we earn less, we must work more years to earn the same salary. Equal Pay Day symbolizes how far into 2013 women must work, on average, to earn what men earned in 2012. Because women “earn less” than men, they must work longer for the same amount of pay.
Tuesday, April 9, 2013, is Equal Pay Day. Michigan Equal Pay Day Coalition and Partners will have an Equal Pay Day Press Conference at the Michigan State Capitol in Lansing at noon. As a symbol of “pay inequity” participants will be wearing “RED” to show that women and minorities are still “in the red” with their pay!
