Tell Congress to Stop President Bush’s Tax Cuts for the Wealthy!

National Call-In Day: March 19

Call (202) 224-3121

President George W. Bush’s tax restructuring plan would give big tax breaks to the wealthy but almost no relief to workers. Nearly one in three taxpayers—31 percent— would get no benefit from Bush’s tax cuts and almost half would receive less than $100. The Bush tax package would leave our federal government $2 trillion poorer at a time when many public needs must be met.

The president’s tax cuts would siphon money away from important initiatives such as:

Unemployment Insurance—Over the past two years, the economy has lost more than 2 million private-sector jobs. But the president’s budget does not extend unemployment benefits for all affected workers.

State and Local Governments—State and local governments are drowning in a sea of red ink. As a result, important priorities such as education, health care and child care are being hit with massive cutbacks.

Education—The president’s budget does not fully fund the No Child Left Behind Act. For fiscal year 2004, the president’s budget falls $6 billion short of the $18.5 billion called for by the act.

Jobs—The president’s budget does not include the investments in public schools, transportation and transit systems, clean water and our industrial base needed to create jobs and spur economic growth. Every $1 billion invested in road, rail, air and water transport infrastructure is estimated to create 40,000 jobs.

Homeland Security—The Bush budget not only cuts money for police, it also falls $10 billion short in funding homeland security needs. Domestic security is being compromised as firefighters and police are being laid off around the nation.

CALL CONGRESS ON MARCH 19—THE NATIONAL CALL-IN DAY

Please call your senators at:
(202) 224-3121

Tell them that particularly now with a weak economy and the prospect of a costly war, they must oppose President Bush’s tax cut package.
