Robert "Bob" Madore was elected director of UAW Region 9A on June 14, 2006, at the UAW's 34th Constitutional Convention in Las Vegas. Region 9A covers eastern New York (including New York City, Green Island and Westchester County), Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
Madore joined the staff of the UAW in July 1989 and was appointed assistant regional director by then-UAW Region 9A Director Phil Wheeler. As assistant director, Madore was involved in contract negotiations between the UAW and numerous employers throughout the region and played a key role in Region 9A's organizing efforts in the Northeast and Puerto Rico.
Madore joined UAW Local 376 in 1964 when he began work as a machinist at Emhart Manufacturing in Windsor, Conn. He quickly became active in Local 376, an amalgamated local union with 5,000 members at 28 employers throughout Connecticut. Over the years, Madore served in various leadership roles, including recording secretary, health and welfare administrator, shop chair, business agent, financial secretary-treasurer and president.
As a local union officer, he negotiated contracts, participated in numerous arbitration cases, presented cases at the NLRB, trained union stewards in handling grievances and assisted with organizing campaigns.
From 1983 to 1987, Madore served on the board of directors of the Teachers Credit Union.
A longtime political and community activist, Madore has been involved in voter registration programs and political campaigns in Connecticut. He served as chair of Local 376's Community Action Program (CAP) and the UAW Political Action Councils from 1986 to 1989; he was vice chair of both groups from 1979 to 1986. He also has been a member of the Bolton Democratic Town Committee since 1980 and has attended numerous state and national Democratic Party conventions. He currently serves as an executive board member on both the New York City Central Labor Council and New York State AFL-CIO.
Madore has served on the board of the North Central Connecticut Health Maintenance Organization, the Kaiser HMO Feasibility Study Committee and the United Way of Hartford.
Over the years, he has spoken to many groups of high school students about the history and purpose of labor unions.
Madore was born on Dec. 3, 1945 in Hartford, Conn. He graduated from East Hartford High School and attended Greater Hartford Community College where he was enrolled in the labor studies program.
Bob and his wife, Diane Daigle Madore, have two sons, Robert and Mark, and four grandchildren. The Madores live in Bolton, Conn.
