Local 22
"Cadillac workers" organized in September 1936 when Local 174 -- the home local of Walter Reuther -- was formed. The local was chartered as Local 22 in 1945. The 2,900 active members of the local still make the Cadillac at GM's Hamtramck (Mich.) assembly plant. Members of Local 22 also include 460 workers at the GM powertrain facility in Livonia, Mich., nurses at three GM facilities, as well as workers at Vitec -- a manufacturer of gas tanks for various cars. Local 22's retiree chapter is 6,000 strong.

Local 140
Established on Oct. 1, 1935, Local 140 was the first local to be granted a charter by the UAW. Today the local includes 4,300 members who work at DaimlerChrysler’s Warren (Mich.) Truck plant, where they build the Dodge Dakota and Dodge Ram trucks. The local also includes 2,500 retirees and approximately 20 workers at DaimlerChrysler’s Sterling Heights (Mich.) Vehicle Test Center.

Local 160
The 2,300 Local 160 members at the Warren (Mich.) Technical Center build prototype, mule and show vehicles for General Motors. The local also includes 3,100 retirees.

Local 228
Local 228 represents 3,800 UAW members at the Visteon Sterling Axle Plant in Sterling Heights, Michigan, who build gear sets, axles, and drive shafts for Ford and General Motors.

Local 251
Local 251 represents approximately 2,200 members who work in automotive, health care, rail transportation, financial services, sporting equipment and other industries in southwestern Ontario, Canada.

Local 262 - Richard Shoemaker Skill Center
Located in Livonia, Mich., the Richard Shoemaker Skill Center provides educational opportunities that enhance the quality of life for UAW Local 262 members, their spouses and retirees.

Local 400
Based in Utica, Mich., Local 400 represents approximately 5,500 men and women who work at the Visteon trim facilities in Chesterfield and Utica, Ford's Romeo engine plant, Highland Park warehouse and Michigan proving grounds. The local also represents 4,000 retirees.

Local 412
As one of the largest amalgamated UAW locals in the country, Local 412 serves a very diverse membership including salary, hourly, skilled trades and public sector employees. In all fields - from engineering and design in the automotive and defense industries to attorneys in the public sector to skilled tradespersons - UAW Local 412 supports the needs and growth of a diversified active group of over 5,000 trained professionals.

Local 594
The 6,000 UAW members who work at General Motors Pontiac (Mich.) Assembly Center make the GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado medium-duty pickup trucks. Local 594 also boasts a 6,000-member active retiree chapter.

Local 909
Local 909 represents the proud men and women at the GM Powertrain plant (Warren, Mich.) who build world-class transmissions, torque converters, control arms and wheels.

Local 1796
Established in 1972, UAW Local 1796 was the first academic institution to join the UAW. The local operates at five campuses of Wayne County Community College. These campuses are located in industrial, rural and metropolitan areas where a major share of Michigan's technical and skilled occupations are located.

Local 1981 - Southeast Michigan Chapter of the National Writers Union
The National Writers Union (NWU) is the trade union for freelance writers of all genres who work for American publishers or employers. They are committed to improving the economic and working conditions of freelance writers through the collective strength of their 6,500 members in 17 local chapters throughout the country. The Southeast Michigan chapter has about 140 members located around the state.

Local 1979
On-line home of the 450-member Professional and Administrative Union of Wayne State University. The site includes Local 1979 news and events, as well as contract information and bylaws.

Local 2280
The 1,750 active members of Local 2280 work at Ford Motor Company's transmission plant in Sterling Heights, Mich. The local also includes 450 retired members.

Joseph Peters

Joseph (Joe) Peters Jr. was elected director of UAW Region 1 by delegates to the Region 1 Special Convention on January 20, 2005 , in Warren , Mich. He was re-elected on June 14, 2006 , at the union's 34th Constitutional Convention.

Peters, a UAW member since 1967, had served as assistant director of Region 1 since November 1999.

In 1988 Peters was appointed to the UAW International staff by President Owen Bieber and assigned to the UAW National Ford Department, under the direction of UAW Vice President Stephen P. Yokich.

During his 11 years in the union’s National Ford Department, Peters was involved in four sets of national negotiations.

Peters served as health and safety coordinator and assistant director under UAW Vice President Ernie Lofton. Peters subsequently served as assistant director for health and safety, quality, benefits and job security under Vice President Ron Gettelfinger.

In 1999 Peters was appointed assistant director of Region 1 by UAW President Yokich on the recommendation of Region 1 Director Kenneth B. Terry.

Born January 11, 1948 , in Highland Park , Mich. , Peters graduated from Highland Park High School in 1965. He attended Highland Park Community College for two years, and also spent one year at both Wayne State University in Detroit , Mich. , and Oakland University in Rochester , Mich.

A UAW Local 400 member, Peters first worked at Ford Motor Co.’s Mount Clemens ( Mich. ) Paint Plant. He was laid off in 1969 and rehired at Ford’s Utica ( Mich. ) Trim Plant that same year.

In 1978 he was elected midnight shift committeeman, and in 1981 he was elected to the plant bargaining committee. Three years later, he was elected chairman of the Utica Plant.

Peters was elected vice president of Local 400 in 1985, assumed the presidency in 1986 and was re-elected president in 1988.

He was also elected delegate to the UAW’s 27th and 28th Constitutional Conventions in 1983 and 1986. He served as national negotiator from Sub-Council 5 for the UAW Ford negotiations in 1987.

A veteran community and political activist, Peters is a member of the Michigan Democratic Party, a Life member of the NAACP, and a member of Coalition of Black Trade Unionists and Elks Lodge 2169 in Troy, Mich.

He and his wife, Ann, live in Rochester Hills , Mich. They have four children — Dusty, Matt, Chris and Maureen — and six granddaughters: Annie, Ellie, Ruby, Payton, Macy Jo, Presley and grandson Joseph.
